Our purpose

Building power for every generation

Our Columbus Way is how this branch works. It is how a branch founded in 1915 stays present in 2026: not by asking anyone to admire history, but by organizing the people, the partners, and the pressure that change who systems answer to.

Convene. We bring people, organizations, and relationships into the same room, including the ones that were working the same problem apart.

Coordinate. We align calendars, messages, and action, and we share information, so the work does not collide and does not duplicate.

Consensus. We are not a monolith. We hold diverse views and find the shared position that carries collective weight.

Coalition. First with each other: members, Black leaders, Black organizers, Black institutions. Not unanimity. Trust and infrastructure that lead to decisions that benefit the whole. Then with the organizations fighting the same fight, so that aligned people and aligned partners move as one.

Collective power. Through these steps, a branch with over a century of history turns that history into present-day power: the organized, collective power Black Columbus needs for the moment we are in.

Our commitment

We organize with Columbus communities to confront injustice, protect rights, and build the power needed to shape a more equitable future.

NAACP Columbus is the spine of a coalition, not an empire. We do not absorb partners and we do not claim their victories. Partners decide their own positions, campaigns, and programming, and we help them do all of it better.

That is what revolutionary infrastructure looks like in Columbus: membership, legal redress, political action, crisis response, youth leadership, media, and data, organized into something that outlasts any one of us. Reform changes what a system does. Revolution changes who has the power to make the system answer.

This Branch is older than most of the institutions it holds to account. That is leverage, and leverage only works if you can document it. We are building a Black Columbus history function: the founding era, the campaigns that shaped this city, the people who carried the work, and the elders who remember what the paper record does not. Some of it is in archives. Most of it is in living rooms. Tell us about an elder whose story belongs in the archive.
